The classic age of Hollywood movies was full of extraordinary events – this period changed the world of cinema forever. Here are some of the craziest facts about Old Hollywood celebs, their personal lives and movies.
#1 Marlene Dietrich insured her voice for one million dollars
#2 Gary Cooper was offered the part of Rhett Butler in "Gone with the Wind" but couldn't agree because of his long-term contract with Goldwyn Studios
#3 Shelley Winters and Marilyn Monroe were roommates when they only arrived to Hollywood to start their careers
#4 At the beginning of his career, Bela Lugosi didn't speak much English, so he had to learn his parts phonetically
#5 The rivalry between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis is believed to have lasted for more than half a century. Though nobody knew the truth about their relationship, when Crawford passed away, Davis famously said, “You should never say bad things about the dead, you should only say good. Joan Crawford is dead. Good.”
#6 Director Mike Nichols didn't let Robert Redford play the main character in "The Graduate" as "no one would believe Redford was a loser". When Redford disagreed, Nichols asked, "Okay, have you ever struck out with a girl?" Redford frankly replied, "What do you mean?"
#7 Katharine Hepburn’s love affair with Spencer Tracy lasted for 27 years, until Tracy's death. His marriage was unhappy but Tracy never divorced.
#8 Natalie Wood, James Dean, and Sal Mineo were the main actors of "Rebel Without a Cause". All of them died died young in a bad way: Wood drowned, Dean died in a car crash, Mineo was stabbed to death.
#9 Marlene Dietrich received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1947 for entertaining US troops during WWII. A German-born actress, she was a staunch opponent of Nazism.
#10 Because of John Wayne's anti-communist sentiments, Joseph Stalin wanted him dead. Luckily, the Soviet assassins never had a chance to fulfill that order

I went to Google and saw the Natalie Wood dies at age 43, James Dean was 24 and Sal Mineo was 37. Still they were too young when they died.

Cynthia Carpenter, agreed. I remember as a child of about 10 years old seeing The Towering Inferno at the movies and I couldn't stop staring at Paul Newman even then. I thought he was so mesmerizing.
The man was almost 50 years old! For the record, I also think he was hunkier than Robert Redford. He was not the least bit stuck on himself...
