Long before Christopher Columbus, the Americas were already inhabited by different tribes. Those indigenous American groups had a flourishing culture and amazing traditions. Though most of the information was lost, there are still a lot of curious facts about Native Americans. If you want to learn them, read the article!
While “Native Americans” is often used in the USA as a politically correct term, it is not accepted by many actual natives. In Canada, they have used terms such as “first nations” while it is less offensive because it does not refer to them as “Americans”. It has still not been completely accepted by the native people. It’s hard to find a word that will please everybody because there are hundreds of different tribes and they have different opinions.
Another common misconception is that Native Americans were primitive people. Some people view their society as similar to that of a third-world country. However, the Native Americans had a very advanced society with medicine, trading, farming, and many other things that were common in European culture. They just did things differently, and it is important to understand that “different” does not mean “primitive”.
Even before so many of the natives were killed, a good many of them did not live in teepees at all. There were many different forms of dwellings used by different tribes in different regions. Teepees were mainly used by natives who needed to travel regularly because they were easy to break down and take with them.
Due to popular culture, many people think of Native American medicine as primitive. However, when the Europeans first came to America, their medicine wasn’t any more advanced than that of the natives, just different. Also, many of the herbal remedies used by the Native American people have been found with recent studies to be very effective.
For many Native American tribes, long hair symbolizes pure and spiritual thoughts, traditions and connection to each other. The cutting of hair was often seen as an act of humiliation.
Many words in the English language come from Algonquian. The Algonquian were the first tribe met by English explorers and common words like pecan, raccoon, and chipmunk come from their language.
Native American tribes were quite liberal. Many tribes acknowledged the existence of a third gender, two-spirited individuals who were believed to embody both male and female traits. Although they were often male and married other males, they weren’t seen as being homosexual.
#8 Warrior Native American women fought alongside men
Many Native American women were sharpshooters and able horse riders. Men and women had jobs and duties decided by gender, but women were also often on the front lines alongside their men. Buffalo Calf Road Woman was the most famous of them.

These ethnical groups are the real original inhabitants of what is Canada and the United States of North America and as such, should be respected and given the position they deserve.
It's long overdue that the "First People" of the Americas and Canada are finally getting recognized for the leaders in many areas BEFORE. the European settlers or any other race came along.
I've often read that horses were unknown in the Americas before the Europeans came. However, many of the pictures of indigenous people show them riding or using horses - presumably a skill which they could have acquired only after the Europeans came. I'd like to find out more about the arrival of horses and how the indigenous people became such skilled horsemen (and women!). More info, please.
I ALWAYS ADMIRED THE NATIVE INDIANS AS THEY HAVE TAKEN CARE OF PEOPLE AND PETS AND EVEN MEAT, VEGETABLES, BIRDS.....THEY NEVER KILLED MORE THAN THEY PERSONALLY NEEDED TO FEED TRIBE. THEY ALSO BLESSED GOD EVERY DAY AND THEY STILL DO. GOD BLESS THEM!!!!.
Reparations should DEFINITELY be given to these first nation tribes!! The slaughter of these first nation tribes by the United States government in the past just reinforces the fact that REAL AMERICANS loves their country but fears their government!! THIS IS WHY THE FOUNDING FATHERS GAVE AMERICAN CITIZENS THEIR 2ND AMENDMENT RIGHT TO PROTECT THEMSELVES NOT ONLY FROM FOREIGN INVADERS BUT DOMESTIC INVADERS INCLUDING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT!!
If the First Nation people don’t like to be referred to as Native Americans, why was the article written using that terminology. That’s just ignorant and shies no respect to the people of the First Nations.
I have read in some Archaeological studies that even they are not now considered the First settlers of the continent, that there were others before them who they wiped out, I believe that it has been proved that some ancient burial grounds show DNA which has no relationship to the so called First Nation peoples.
The American Indian in reality were actually the very first immigrants to the UNITED STATES. They migrated from Mongolia and far eastern China as well as Russia during the Ice Age traveling across the ice bridge now referred to as the Alieutian chain of Islands connecting Russia to Alaska and the American continent of Canada and today’s United States. They are truly the ORIGINAL settlers of the American Continent.
I never really liked being called black. When I was a young kid watching Cowboys and Indian movies I always wanted the Indians to win, I did not find out till later on in life that on my mom side of the family they were Choctaw and on my father side my great grandfather was black feet. I am being called black so I’ll except it and not argue with people
The First Nations had thriving cultures and a vast knowledge of plant-based medicines during a time when Europeans physicians were still bleeding their patients as a supposed remedy for a variety of common ailments. Unfortunately, neither European nor Indigenous medicines were effective in combatting smallpox, which killed millions of First Nations peoples and left the survivors defenceless against the onslaught of European colonization.
No horses to ride before the Spanish brought them over. Also no guns for sharpshooters before Europeans brought them to America! Yes, their cultures and medicines are very important, but don’t confuse yesterday with today.
